Personally, only discovered this site yesterday; posted by a member of Secret Leeds. Please read my posting; it may, just may, be something that will attract people to this site. Just an idea!

Alando, can you link to your post on SL please?

Hi Joe, The post I was referring to was in this forum a couple of days ago. I suggested a section or category devoted to long lost friends. It would just be a facility of asking if anyone knew of a ********** and would they kindly pass on an email address. Any correspondence after that would be via email.

i 2nd this idea, as that is originally why i joined here 3 or 4 yrs ago:nod:

It's not a bad idea, although i don't think it would get used much. There are other sites that offer this service.

I don't believe that someone who knows Mr x should pass their details onto a member of the forum, rather that they pass the forum members details to Mr x and he can decide whether to contact the member

there are 2 sides to it,i agree but the people im after would in my eyes not go on a site like that and are more likely to come on here
but i do see your point
but say i say has any one heard of andy kelly sort of thing then the information could be pm,d to me etc
or the said persons i name in a relavent area they might look at

I think the forum is ticking over just lovely! Its grown gradually so we all get to know each other before it becomes a huge mass of posters. I like the "personal" feel :)

I respect all your points but just to exemplify what I mean. . . if anyone knows a Terry Wright, orignally lived in east End Park Leeds, has a daughter named Gaynor, would you please pass my email address add@waitrose.com> onto to him. I was best man at his wedding so he knows who I am very well. Thats the kind of posting I envisage. As I said, thereafter all contact/correspondence would be via email or what ever arrangement the parties agreed. This frees the website from any further involement and does not turn it into a chatroom. Having said that, there are lots of pople who use them especially to disuss hobbies and/or interests they may have in common (not me I hasten to add lol) I hope this clarifies what I had in mind. It's just an idea!

As a newcomer, I welcome this kind of forum. I have lived only six months in the area and having this kind of forum to go to makes me feel less on my own. I have worked in the city centre and had the odd evening out, but having someone to chat too on a kind of neighbourly basis makes me feel as if I belong. As long as it doesn't get to the tacky dating-site heights, I think I will visit this site often.

Roy, please don't get me wrong, I am certain that people could very easily get to know each other in a coupleskindaofway, but wouldn't you agree that a lot of sites that started out as places to chat and share opinions end up being used as ways to date people on them and end up over-shadowing the universal purpose of the site? I was a member of the global WAYNE site for some time because I had friends in various parts of the world and friends who went to other countries to work, and then I started getting all kinds of messages from guys (and woman sometimes) who weren't interested in talking about the area of the world you lived in or passing on useful places to visit etc.

My intention in mentioning this in my initial post was not to cause offence.

Sheffield Forum is unique. Bless Geoff, he was in the right place at the right time.

Sheffield has its glorious socialist past, which makes for some thrilling left v right debates on SF. We were a heavily unionised city in the seventies and eighties and even after Labour trashed the country over 13 years, the city just elected the Lib Dems to run it.

You need a nice mix of left and right views on here to spice things up. I see that many of you seem to have intelligent liberal views, but nobody puts up intelligent conservative or right-wing views.

Cool! and see every thread turn into a slanging match and end up being closed. You are right SF is unique.

    You aren't kidding!

Every time somebody loses an argument, they begin criticising other users' spelling and grammar

I just criticise Leeds instead :)

I'd be happy to know the reason behind your unfounded vendetta against Leeds.

Could you detail it in a reasonable manner, and please stop using *s instead of "E"s
