“Reality exists in the human mind, and nowhere else.”

    — George Orwell, 1984

Artists and thinkers throughout the ages have attempted to define and portray the mystery of the Human Condition. Modern art frequently interrogates our ‘ways of seeing’: René Magritte painted two works entitled ‘The Human Condition’ which drew attention to the fallacies of human perception. Charles Darwin and the philosopher Mary Midgeley have called into question whether we are categorically different from the rest of the animal kingdom. Existentialism investigates humanity’s place in a world where we are free to make our own decisions but simultaneously lack a higher purpose.

The theme is a timeless one, and invites more questions than can ever be answered: are we born as human tabula rasa or as the sum of our inherited traits? Is the concept of consciousness reducible to natural causes or is there more to the mind than the material world? What marks us out as human and different from the rest of the animal kingdom?

Each of the artists in this group exhibition have created a personal response to the concept of the ‘The Human Condition’. The range of approaches and narratives reflect the complex and highly personal nature of what it means to be human.

There are a range of talks, activities and music events throughout the exhibition, which are open to all.
