Laraaji - Ambient 3: Day of Radiance
    Friday 27 May, 7.45pm

American musician Laraaji debuts at the Howard Assembly Room this May, performing his Brian Eno-produced 1980 classic, Ambient 3: Day of Radiance, to coincide with the album’s recent re-release on Glitterbeat Records.

Having studied violin and piano from a young age, Laraaj’s musical exploration took a turn for the unexpected when he stumbled across a zither in a pawn shop and transfigured the instrument with the use of electronic elements. From that moment, he began honing his skill, and the unique sounds he could now produce on the zither, busking in public spaces across New York. That’s where Laraaji’s life changed. Discovered by Brian Eno in Washington Square Park, he was invited to record an album - one that today still remains an iconic and ground-breaking collection of sounds.

Over his career Laraaji has released over 40 records, some with leading collaborators, and Ambient 3 still remains his most recognised record to date. Released as the third instalment of Brian Eno’s Ambient series, Laraaji’s meditative music has been described by Pitchfork as a ‘hypnotic listen’.

Laraaji’s dazzling creation has to be heard - The Arts Desk

Laraaji describes his music as ‘beautiful’, ‘ethereal’ or ‘celestial’ and it’s not hard to understand why. The ever-shimmering cloud of sound created on Ambient 3 has been widely celebrated since the original release date. Using an uncharted synthesis of resonating zither textures, interlocking hammered rhythms and 3-D sound treatments, Laraaji produces ‘layer upon layer of looped and repeated melodies [to] create a wondrous cavalcade of near angelic sounds’ (Louder than War) to release an intense energy that is simply electric when heard live.
