Do you scalp your lawn?

I do some gardening work in my spare time, but I am by no means an expert. But one thing that people seem to do, is cut their lawn too short, and some of it goes yellow.
I notice that Glen Road football pitches in Morley have been cut, and it looks way too short.
It gives weeds a chance to grow, and it is just not health grass when it is yellow.

How do golf greens get past this issue? Is it special grass or is it just because they water them continuously overnight? I thought I'd ask a grass expert.

I am no expert, but if the greens are cut every week, its cutting the lawn once every three/four weeks and then cutting off more than half of the grasses length.
