Bolton council are planning to remove all floral roadside tributes after a month because they say they could be a hazard or a distraction to drivers.
Many people say placing and tending flowers where a person has died in a RTC is a way of helping them through the grieving process.

are they right to remove them after a month

it's quite a new thing here in the UK isn't it, I don't remember them when I was younger.

Personally I find them unnecessarily morbid and I am quite glad they will be removed. I remember those who died by going to visit their grave if I really feel the need, or by just remembering them. I see no need to have a memorial where they died.

o think that they were saying its the dead flowers tc at the scene and they say it distracts other drivers who look at it as they are passing

but the other arguement is,it reminds people how dangerous that stretch of highway etc is

indeed, the sun is out so there are many more distractions for male drivers at the moment, dead flowers don't even come close

That flowers can't be the cause of an accident imho. They are helping us to be more quiet on road.

I blame the maudlin public after Dianas funeral for the descent into these pitiful and unnecessary markers. .They should be removed after a month. Helping people with their grief is baloney. How do they think people coped with grief before this ritual started?

Graveyards are not the place for teddy bears either.

I suspect it's more to do with grieving loved ones than 'maudlin public' and, if it helps them, I don't see that it causes any harm. I've seen that many accidents are caused by drunks, recklessness and speeding, but not by floral tributes. I may be wrong. As for teddy bears in graveyards, I'd say graveyards are no place for babies and children either, but it happens. Let people grieve in any way that helps them.

I can't see anything wrong in roadside memorials. They make me think when I look at them. We are already distracted by massive adverts, like the ones on Burley Road by the student flats, they are so brightly back lit they look like 80 foot TV's.

A memorial, however tacky or gauche you may consider it to be. Is a way of connecting and accepting, that here is the place where a loved one departed. Don't forget, that this is a marker of death.

Stop reader stop and cast an eye
As you are now so once was I
My card you read
My words you see
Prepare yourself to follow me

best roadside tribute I ever read !

thanks, swithout a roadside memorial, I could not have shared it, let wheelie bins go un emptied and pot holes blight our lives, a few flowers and a teddy bear cannot be that much of a distraction, can it?

Which ideas do you mean Wise guy. That a roadside marker is a good idea or that they are just more urban graffitti?

i think like all town planners have sod all to do but mess our towns and citys up
sit in their little groups in their little offices coming up with stupid ideas where money could be better spent

so bolton end up having a team of memorial flower removers so what are they going to cut back on to cover the cost prob street cleaning or waste disposal

personally i dont give a damn because this has never happened to me, i may think different if one of my sons dies in a rtc
but untill that day i have no serious thoughts on the matter
