The benefits of 24-hour drinking have failed to materialise and tougher action is needed to tackle alcohol-related problems, the Home Office says. Do you agree?

Whilst I understood the point of the 24 hour drinking license, I don't think that I was one of the group of society which needed to amend behaviour to reduce alcohol-related issues. If I have any alcohol at all then it's one glass of wine diluted with sparkling water with a meal and that's anything from one day every few months to one day a week.

Whilst there are people who are going to see alcohol as something to overuse or misuse then there's no way that any amount of licensing will change that in just a few years. Changes of national culture take decades, not just a few years.

Any licensing also needs enforcement and that would apply whether pubs shut at 8pm or midnight. Unfortunately there are a hardcore of drinkers who will continue to drink to excess as long as they can afford to do so and that is likely to continue no matter when pubs are allowed to open because so many other outlets also sell alcohol.

i think it just saved landlords doing what we know as afterbird or lock ins
and i presume they put the licence fees up for those who wanted to stay open

nothing wrong with 24 hr drinking, the idea is sound, but it's the culture thats wrong, it works on the continent because they seem more mature about it, we on the other hand seem to need to go out and cane it as much as possible. keep 24 hr drinking, put up the price of booze, so reducing the amount drunk ina short period of time, make the sale of alcohol harder in supermarkets and corner shops to try and stop underage bus shelter drinking. Stop the loss leading sales.
