Lessons about sex, relationships and health are not good enough in 25% of schools in England, inspectors say. Do you think standards could be improved?

How can schools improve sex education?

Highest teenage pregnancy in Europe would suggest they already know too much.

The piece of research mentioned in the BBC piece comments that the shortcomings were mostly in the aspect of relationships, pressure and decision making, rather than the mechanics of what happens when you have sex.

The reasons stated are basically those of teacher embarrassment and lack of training, both of which can be improved upon by teacher training.

If improvements can be made to the teaching then the outcome is likely to be youngsters, particularly young girls, who feel more able to cope with peer pressure and to understand a little more about why their hormones are making them feel as they are, and the result of that could hopefully be youngsters who are a bit more empowered and a bit less likely to land themselves in difficult situations.

There's no such thing as perfection and everyone should strive to make improvements constantly, whether or not there is research showing that your standard of teaching is lacking.

.
I have to agree its nothing to do with “sex education” and more to do with moral and social values, its in the curriculum but something is going wrong.

Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) and religious educationSRE

SRE is lifelong learning about physical, moral and emotional development. It involves teaching about sex, sexuality and sexual health, as well as the importance of stable and loving relationships, and of marriage for family life. It is not about the promotion of any particular sexual orientation or of sexual activity.

You are central to your child’s education about sex and relationships - school SRE aims to complement you in this role. Schools develop their own SRE programmes, taking account of government guidance and statutory requirements - and you should get a say too. Schools are encouraged to consult parents when developing or updating their SRE programme.

A copy of the school’s SRE policy must be available for you to inspect. If you have any concerns about it, talk them over with a member of staff. If you’re not satisfied, you can withdraw your child from all or part of the SRE programme. You can't remove your child from statutory elements which form part of the National Curriculum for science

Thought the Channel 4 sex ed programs a few weeks ago were very good, the kids seemed very naive ( i was too probably at their age) and they seemed to appreciate someone bieng frank and honest with them.
